Also known as Endodontic treatment, root canal treatment is a specialist area of dentistry, focusing on treating disease or injury to the dental pulp in order to quickly and comfortably remove pain and discomfort, treat infection and to save the tooth.
Root Canal Procedure
Root canal treatment is needed when the nerve of the tooth has become damaged by injury or infected by decay. The procedure saves the tooth and can help restore it to its natural function. The procedure’s first step is to numb the area and create an opening in the tooth in order to access the root. The infected tissue is then removed, and the interior of the root cleaned. The root is then filled with a special sealing material, and the opening of the tooth filled with a temporary seal.
After the infection has fully cleared, your dentist will access the tooth and replace the temporary seal with a permanent filling. However in some cases the root canal treatment weakens the tooth and a crown will be required in order to strengthen it.
